FAQs

Have a question ? We are here to help.

Decorative clavos are ornamental iron nail heads
used to add a rustic, hand-crafted look to doors, furniture, cabinets, and
wooden gates. They are traditionally used in Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean,
and Southwestern-style architecture. Our clavos are purely decorative, they add
visual character without the need for structural nailing, making them ideal for
accent work on entry doors, barn doors, cabinet fronts, and wooden chests.

Every clavo in our collection is individually
hand-forged by skilled blacksmiths. This means each piece carries a slightly
irregular, three-dimensional finish that machine-made hardware simply cannot
replicate. The hand-hammering process creates natural variations in texture and
shape, which is exactly what gives rustic iron hardware its authentic,
old-world character.

Our clavos are available in four finishes:
Black, Copper, Bronze, and Natural Iron. Black is the most popular and works
well with dark wood tones and modern rustic interiors. Copper adds warmth and
pairs beautifully with lighter or honey-toned wood. Bronze sits between the two,
versatile for both traditional and contemporary styles. Natural Iron has a raw,
unfinished look that develops a subtle patina over time, ideal for an
ultra-authentic blacksmith aesthetic.

Installation is straightforward. Mark your
desired placement on the wood surface, then pre-drill a small pilot hole
slightly narrower than the clavo's shank. Press or lightly tap the clavo into
the pilot hole until the head sits flush against the wood. For decorative-only
applications where no shank is needed, clavos can also be attached using
heavy-duty construction adhesive. No special tools are required beyond a drill
and a rubber mallet.

The number of clavos you need depends on the
size of your surface, the pattern you choose, and the clavo size you select. Smaller
clavos (0.75"–1") require more pieces to cover the same area and are
best for detailed, dense patterns on cabinet doors, furniture, and smaller
entry doors. Medium clavos (1.25"–1.5") are the most popular choice
for standard entry doors and barn doors, a border pattern on a standard
36" x 80" door typically requires 30–60 pieces depending on spacing.
Larger clavos (2") make a bold statement and require fewer pieces, a
border pattern on the same door may need only 20–35 pieces spaced 5–6 inches
apart. As a general rule, space clavos 3–6 inches apart depending on the size.
We recommend sketching your pattern on paper first to estimate quantity before
ordering. Our clavos are sold in sets so you can order exactly what your
project needs. If you are unsure, contact us and we will help you calculate the
right quantity.

Yes. Our hand-forged iron clavos are built for
both indoor and outdoor use. The zinc undercoating provides a base layer of
protection against rust, and the outer finish adds additional durability. For
exterior applications in high-humidity climates or areas with heavy rainfall,
we recommend applying a clear exterior sealant over the clavos after
installation to extend their lifespan. Properly sealed, they will maintain
their finish and structural integrity for many years.
